Position Title Manager of Outdoor Pursuits and Campus Activities

Position Information

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Student Engagement and Student Life, performs the following operations:  Implement outdoor pursuits and environmental awareness related programs and classes during daytime, evenings and weekends; Coordinate and train paraprofessional staff; Inspect related equipment on a continuing basis; Develop and implement campus-wide student activities and community events.

Supervises Coordinator of Student Center Operations and student employees. Perform other duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • IMPLEMENT OUTDOOR PURSUITS AND ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS RELATED PROGRAMS DURING 2nd shift: afternoon / evening plus some weekends: Coordinate user group participation of activity on climbing wall, high ropes course; Frisbee golf course; Lead outdoor pursuits trips such as climbing, caving, canoe, skiing; Advise outdoor pursuits related clubs.
  • Teach PACE climbing, teach mountain biking, archery, high ropes seminar and trips for credit.
  • COORDINATE AND TRAIN PARAPROFESSIONAL STAFF AND ENGAGE IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES:  Coordinate weekly meetings and individual training; Continue training in the form of conferences, classes, seminars and workshops; Retrain in related program area; Cross train in other areas of recreational activity.
  • INSPECT RELATED EQUIPMENT ON A CONTINUING BASIS:  Inspect and clean climbing wall and high ropes course equipment and supplies; keep inspection log and monitor all outdoor pursuits related risk management.

Develop and implement campus-wide student activities and community events

Provide comprehensive development of safe and positive programs designed as student activities:

  • as alternative to drugs, alcohol, crime and depression
  • to support retention efforts
  • to entice new students
  • to enrich the student experience
  • to promote healthy lifestyle choices
  • to provide education outside of a curriculum
  • to expose the Hocking College community to diverse ideas and concepts 

with the current student as the primary focus and other populations such as prospective students, family, staff, faculty, community and alumni as a secondary focus.

 

  • PERFORM OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED (which should not be over 10 to 15%):  Assist with large programs and events as needed. 
Position Requirements

Qualifications – Education, Experience, and Skills

  • Associate degree in recreation related field required. 

(Degree must be from a regionally or nationally accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent as verified by a member of the national Association of Credential Evaluation Services Inc)

  • Appropriate experience and qualifications.
  • Availability and willingness to work second shift and evenings / weekends as needed.
  • Trained on climbing wall and high ropes course.
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR instructor certification and Wilderness First Responder certification.
  • Experience in a wide variety of outdoor pursuits.
  • Experience in climbing, high ropes and ropes rescue.
  • Experience in leading outdoor pursuits trips.
  • A range of outdoor pursuit qualifications preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license; Good driving record.
  • Familiar with maintenance of all outdoor pursuits related equipment.
  • Good communication skills.

Facility – Areas of Responsibilities

  • Climbing Wall, High Ropes course, Frisbee Golf Course, Outdoor Pursuits Office and all areas of Outdoor Pursuits equipment storage. 
  • Must be able to demonstrate:
    1. Set-up of climb, rappel and ice-climb (on climbing facility)
    2. Proper techniques in lead climbing, ice-climbing, belaying, and rappelling.
    3. Ability to set routes on wall
    4. Ability to inspect and maintain wall and climbing gear
    5. Ability to instruct, disc golf, archery, canoeing paintball and mountain biking.
