Hocking College student Shawn Yates was named nationally as the 2011 Ohio New Century Scholar. A total of six Hocking students were named to the All-Ohio Community College Academic Team, with three winning nationally. In the history of the competition, Hocking College has only had five students place nationally, including those recognized this year.
Yates, a second year Energy Institute student, will receive a $2,000 scholarship. Five other Hocking College students were recognized for their academic achievements and named to the All-Ohio Community College Academic Team. First Team members Chad Dillon, Andrew Leiterman and Yates will receive a $1,000 stipend. Third Team members Timothy Davis, Troy Pingle and Kendra Wilson will receive a $250 certificate.
Additionally, at the national level, Yates was selected earlier this month as the recipient of the Guistwhite Scholarship, where he was awarded a $5,000 scholarship for baccalaureate studies. Yates won every scholarship possible in this competition, including being the top scoring All-USA candidate in Ohio, earning him the designation of New Century Scholar.
Dillon was also selected nationally as a 2011 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar, winning $1,500. Leiterman earned the national designation of 2011 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholar, winning $1,000.
The selected students attended a luncheon in their honor April 28 at the Statehouse Atrium. In his acceptance speech, Yates mentioned his appreciation for his Hocking College education. “ The Hocking College Energy Institute has brightened my future, broadened my horizon, opened doors, and positioned my family for future success,” Yates said.
The All-Ohio Academic Team program provides statewide recognition and cash scholarships to outstanding two-year college students. Winners are selected based on academic performance, demonstration of leadership and community service involvement. The national Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team and the New Century Scholars Program are sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa and American Association of Community Colleges.
